The walk will start at the Wolf food court in Rue Fossé-aux-Loups/Wolvengracht. We will spend a little time looking at the redeveloped CGER/ASLK (Caisse Générale d’Épargne et de Retraite/Algemene Spaar- en Lijfrentekas) bank site and visit the former counter hall, which has been converted into a fascinating food court, designed by the architectural firm Jaspers-Eyers. The multifaceted nature of the complex will be highlighted before we continue our walk, taking in Rue du Marais/Broekstraat where you will discover the same bank’s technologically intriguing Marais complex, designed in 1973 by architects Marcel Lambrichs and Daniel de Laveleye. We will next retrace our steps, going inside the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel (Atelier d’Art Urbain, 1998). The hotel, renovated by Rafael de La-Hoz, was the first building to have panoramic lifts. In Rue d’Assaut/Stormstraat, we will take a closer look at two university buildings: the T’Serclaes building, first used by the bank CBC/KBC and renovated by Jaspers-Eyers in 2009, and the former St Aloysius University College of Economics (EHSAL) building by Alfons Hoppenbrouwers, now part of the Odisee university of applied sciences. Passing by the Marquis Building next to the cathedral (built by Atelier de Genval in 1989, used by the Flemish Community until 2007 and renovated by ALTIPLAN°architects), we will then reach the Ravenstein neighbourhood, Brussels’ very first business district. Architect Alexis Dumont played a key role in this part of the city, filling the void created by the loss of the Putterie/Putterij district. After the Central Plaza, the Lotto Tower, the Shell complex and the Ravenstein Gallery, we will come to the end point and pièce de résistance of the walk: the new headquarters of the bank BNP Paribas Fortis, with its focus on sustainability.
