Discover the art and architecture of the Flemish Parliament

Stefan De Wilde © Vlaams Parlement

The Flemish Parliament occupies a huge eclectic building that was built in 1895 by Joseph Benoît and restored by architects Willy Verstraete and Jozef Feyen from 1987 onwards, when the Flemish Council acquired the building to convert it into its current form, featuring a parliamentary chamber covered by a huge glass dome.

In 1991, the former Postcheque Office, built by modernist architect Victor Bourgeois between 1937 and 1949, was incorporated into the Flemish Parliament. This was the first major public commission for Bourgeois, who went on to design Ostend Town Hall. His ingenious plan involved an H-shaped design allowing natural light to flood into the offices and concentrating all the vertical transit areas in the central part of the building. Its exterior façade features allegorical bas-reliefs designed by sculptor Oscar Jespers, for whom Bourgeois built a house-cum-studio in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre/Sint-Pieters-Woluwe a few years earlier. Restored in 2002, the former Postcheque Office houses the administrative services of the Flemish Parliament. Inside, a large ticket hall, 78 metres long and 28 metres wide, introduces the urban dimension into the building. It has held the Visitors Centre since 2018.
