The Christophe Gevers archives - A heritage to be discovered
Christophe Gevers (Antwerp 1928 – Ohain 2007) loved to transform interiors into living spaces. Whether in community or domestic settings, he humanised the codes of residential architecture, thanks to a profound ‘intelligence of the hands’ and a consistently empirical knowledge of materials and techniques.
The Christophe Gevers Archives preserve at the Design Museum Brussels a wealth of property and documentary archives. We are opening the doors of the new documentation centre to offer an insight into the creative process of this seminal figure in Belgian interior architecture and design. Gevers’ drawings, plans, sketches and models are working and communication tools that he deployed with passion and enthusiasm. They reflect his vision, meticulousness and profound talent for transforming a place into a functional, user-friendly space. The aim is to guide you through the archives and models in the Christophe Gevers Archives, and to share with you the treasure trove of documents that constitute a key chapter in the history of Belgian design. Highlights of this unique tour will include plans and cross-sections of iconic Brussels interiors, as well as models of the Twins Cinema, the Quick restaurant in Avenue Louise/Louizalaan and Bank Brussels Lambert.
As an introduction to the tour, you will be able to enjoy Alexandre Humbert’s audiovisual work produced for the exhibition Christophe Gevers, the Architecture of Detail, which ran from 11 October 2023 to 10 March 2024 at the Design Museum Brussels. The film goes in search of the physical and emotional imprints left by Gevers’ work, and looks at the durability of architectural gestures today.
