Around Heysel: Art Deco served on a silver platter

© 91ᵉ parallèle

In 1935, Brussels hosted the Universal Exhibition. The Heysel Plateau and the village of Laeken were completely redeveloped, giving pride of place to Art Deco and Modernist styles. From major infrastructures such as the Palais des Expositions and the Brugmann Hospital to single-family residences and workers’ housing, these buildings display all the attributes of interwar architecture. Although located between the major roads, the district nevertheless retains its provincial character.
