L’Autre École was founded in 1973 by primary school teacher Henry Landroit, in response to a request from a number of parents looking for an alternative to traditional education. The school applies Freinet pedagogy and caters for nursery and primary classes. Originally consisting of just 20 or so children, it soon attracted a growing number of pupils, meaning that teachers and pupils had to move regularly to larger and larger premises. In 1984, it took up residence on Place Félix Govaert/Félix Govaertplein in Auderghem/Oudergem. When the landlord announced the end of the lease in 1996, the parents at the time got together to plan the construction of a new school building. They found a brownfield site left vacant by the former railway station on Place Félix Govaert/Félix Govaertplein, which architect Yves Lepère transformed into a school in 1996. It is a long brick building topped by a semicircular arched zinc roof, with a lively mix of textures and patterns along the side walls.
