Forêt de Soignes Sports Centre

ULB © urban.brussels, 2022

This is a rare Brussels example of high-tech architecture, or techno-architecture, a movement that emerged in the 1970s at the tail-end of modernism, which was then being widely called into question. High-tech went beyond brutalism, incorporating various technological industrial elements. The stand-out example is obviously the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, designed by architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers in 1977. The Forêt de Soignes Sports Centre is in a way Brussels’ own small version of the Centre Pompidou. Built in the period from 1984 to 1986 to a design by architect Pierre Corbisier and landscape architect Jean-Noël Capart, the building also references the architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, particularly in its highly transparent qualities. Structural rigour is probably the most striking feature of Corbisier’s work. He designed many sports-related structures, but this is certainly the best known. The building is very austere in its form, with nothing concealed by contrivances. Its main qualities are transparency and clarity, which are often found in Corbisier’s work. Its three-dimensional steel roof and accentuated infrastructure put the technical and structural elements on display in a way that is typical of the high-tech movement. Enlarged in 1987, the centre includes an annexe housing a 165-bed youth hostel, offices and a multi-purpose hall.
