House of Luc and Claire Schuiten
Architect and designer Luc Schuiten renovated a 20th-century Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek house into postmodern apartments and other housing. The original building was constructed in 1912 by architect Raymond Foucart in an Art Nouveau-tinged eclectic style, very much in vogue at that time. In 1986, Luc Schuiten remodelled the façade and its interior, giving it an original and unique character. The house is divided into four apartments, three of them being rented out. Schuiten kept the ground floor, with its rear garden, for himself. The street façade features various postmodern interventions that highlight certain architectural details: the loggia, the woodwork of the eaves and the sgraffito. The apartment opens onto a garden forming a 45° angle between the south and east façades. Schuiten installed a veranda to create a winter garden that blends seamlessly into the outdoor garden. The rear façade was specially redesigned to give each apartment terraces with planters. Nature is an integral part of Schuiten’s architecture, as it is in his illustrations. The frames were redesigned to provide each apartment with the best possible view and lighting. The downpipes descend in a tree-like pattern to a rainwater tank whose contents are used for flushing toilets and watering plants. Inside, each space has its own atmosphere, with integrated and movable furniture designed by the architect. Of particular note is the wooden bathtub, custom designed to hold Schuiten and his wife, with the taps being replaced by river pebbles.
