A former covered market made entirely of glass and steel, the Halles de Schaerbeek/Hallen van Schaarbeek have been a fixture in the cultural landscape of Brussels, Belgium and Europe for almost 50 years now. The unrivalled size of the spaces here makes them an ideal place to reinvent the forms of the show, taking it beyond the conventional division between creators on one side and audience on the other. Shaking up established norms, the Halles/Hallen epitomise the spirit of participation and involvement, whether by individuals or groups, that characterises the digital age. Open to the hopes and upheavals of our time, from the local to the international, this venue seeks to showcase the best of what Europe has to offer as it constantly seeks to shape its future: exploring new trends and combining the sensible with the adventurous, the fast-paced with the more sedate. Dance, circus and hybrid performances offer audiences entertainment, emotion and shared experiences. The venue also hosts more unusual events, lasting anything from three days to three weeks, in which professionals, students and arts lovers come together to experience a blend of the popular and the high-brow, of discussion and performance, that pushes the boundaries of the traditional show. Last but not least, the Halles/Hallen champion up-and-coming artists through a strong policy of co-production with Belgian and European companies, and delegated production for those from the Wallonia Brussels Federation. For this September weekend, the Halles de Schaerbeek/Hallen van Schaarbeek will be welcoming Dragons, a contemporary dance show by Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn.
