Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale/Huis van Culturen en Sociale Samenhang
The Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale/Huis van Culturen en Sociale Samenhang (House of Cultures and Social Cohesion) is based in the large eclectic-style building constructed between 1878 and 1880 by architect Joachim Benoît to house the Academy of Drawing. Its aim is to help people get to grips with new means of knowledge and self-expression to enable them to influence their immediate surroundings. This involves a dialogue-based programme that promotes the cultural heritage of all and helps ensure that there is common ground between the values of each participant through listening and openness to others. Nurturing creativity and developing artistic knowledge in others are among the priorities of the centre, which also fosters discussion about popular – traditional – cultures and modern, contemporary thought. Recently, the organisation has completely redesigned the layout and use of its large interior courtyard, which is accessible from the street. This new public space can be adapted flexibly for different activities, and is an ideal place to take a break from the pace of city life, to daydream and engage in discussions. Several relaxation areas made from durable materials are dotted around the courtyard, and there will also be a bar and healthy snack outlet to complete the hospitable vibe. (Listed 18/07/1996)
