Saint Mary Magdalene Armenian Apostolic Church

A. de Ville de Goyet © urban.brussels

The church was designed by Armenian architect Haik Mardikian and engineer Jacques Kupélian between 1985 and 1990. While clearly postmodernist in its materials and geometric volumes, it is based loosely on the 10th-century Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island in Turkey, with both buildings featuring a Greek-cross plan and dome. The latter rests on an octagonal drum that is set in a square. The façades, almost all of them identical, immediately proclaim the building's interplay of pure geometric shapes, livened up by alternating strips of white and pink Burgundy stone. The first storey on each side features two oblong openings topped by a semicircular arch, each containing a 45° pilaster, giving the building an original patterning and subdued light. The sober interior underlines the postmodern style. The windowless dome, covered in gold leaf, rests on moulded concrete columns veined in faux marble. The organ was built by Patrick Collon in 1991.
