Local residents get together to get the city moving
For many years, the area around Porte de Namur/Naamsepoort was neglected by the authorities, becoming the preserve of ‘hourly motels’, now known as ‘love hotels’, where rooms are rented by the hour or by the day. Nowadays, these places no longer have the ‘shady’ appearance they had in the past and have been renovated to modern standards. The area too has been given a makeover, thanks to the hard work and tenacity of its residents. As a result, it is now home to attractive pedestrianised streets with shrubberies that blend in with the neatly done-up houses. The success of this initiative has prompted residents of nearby areas to instigate plans for pedestrianised streets in and around Matongé/Matonge, Rue de la Tulipe/Tulpstraat and Place Fernand Cocq/Fernand Cocqplein. This tour will take you through some streets which are now nice places to meet up and others which will soon be following suit.
