The Martyrs/Martelaars and Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges/Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw neighbourhoods, past and present

What did the Martyrs/Martelaars (around Rue Neuve/Nieuwstraat) and Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges/Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw (around Place du Congrès/Congresplein) neighbourhoods look like 100 years ago or more? Where did their residents meet? Where were the markets? You will find the answers in the photos and documents collected over the years by the Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges/Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw neighbourhood committee and various institutions based in the Martyrs/Martelaars neighbourhood. This exhibition, staged in Place des Martyrs/Martelaarsplein, will provide you with all the information you need to add details onto a map of the two neighbourhoods, ready for a stroll around meeting places past and present.

You will also be invited to contribute to a totem pole in Place des Martyrs/Martelaarsplein, on which testimonies by residents of the two neighbourhoods and passers-by will be displayed. The totem pole featuring messages/testimonies, anecdotes and photos taken during the walk will provide a valuable lasting record of the lived experience of these two areas’ residents.

In cooperation with the Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges/Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw neighbourhood committee, the associations/cultural and educational venues involved as partners in MaN’Aige, and residents of the Martyrs/Martelaars and Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges/Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw neighbourhoods.
