Parc Tour & Taxis/Park Tour & Taxis: the origins and culmination of an evolving project
When Tour & Taxis stopped carrying out customs clearance and storage activities, the land degenerated into a brownfield railway site. Thanks to the efforts of many stakeholders and associations, the built heritage was saved, and new purposes were found for it. Whereas in the initial plans, vegetation was little more than a decorative element surrounding tightly packed buildings, the idea of establishing a public park gradually emerged. This new space extends via a green corridor as far as Place Émile Bockstael/Émile Bockstaelplein, and also makes its way, in the form of enclosed gardens, to the former Gare Maritime station, now accessible again after a major redevelopment. A number of challenges need to be overcome to ensure the seamless integration of this new public space, which adjoins some densely populated neighbourhoods. It aims to be a place where people can meet and enjoy a variety of activities, including those of sustainable urban farming project Parckfarm. On this walk, you will see how the contours of the past are being reinterpreted in the various parts of the park to create a whole new landscape.
