Let’s meet on the steps…
Steps are meeting points and, in cities, familiar landmarks to everyone. They are transitional spaces, providing a way to get from one level to another and from one ambiance to another. Some are grand and steeped in history, while others form the backdrop for festive or memorable events or are locations for protests.
While some look out onto unexpected vistas and have wonderful views, others are narrow, hidden away and seemingly forgotten about, yet all are places where people pass and interact with each other.
The stairs leading down to an urban basement or descending into an underground crypt tell us a lot about Brussels’ history. Meanwhile, steps surrounded by greenery invite us to rest and meditate, or provide a quiet spot for a romantic rendezvous.
Steps are also forums and showcases for artistic expression. They are a place where skaters practise their acrobatics, musicians jam and graffiti artists ply their trade. They invite us to enjoy the moment together, take a breather or simply bask in the sun. In short, Brussels without its steps just wouldn’t be Brussels.
