Walking tour

Around the Béco basin

Originally intended for unloading goods and construction materials, the Béco basin is seeing its surroundings gradually transformed. The businesses on Quai des Matériaux/Materialenkaai are going to make way for a park, the cargo barges have been replaced by other types of boat – used for passenger tours of the port or hosting parties and events – and a new museum of modern and contemporary art is taking shape. In the meantime, the area will continue playing host to a series of events such as Bruxelles les Bains/Brussel Bad and the pop-ups of Allee du Kaai and its civic, social, cultural and sporting activities. A new footbridge spans the Béco basin, transforming it from a barrier between two neighbourhoods into a place where people can meet and take part in cultural, tourist and recreational activities.
