Walking tour

Place Bockstael/Bockstaelplein and its surroundings

Place Émile Bockstael/Émile Bockstaelplein has long been the beating heart of the former municipality of Laeken/Laken. Very much a meeting place for the community, this ‘town square’ hosts a Saturday-morning market and seasonal fairs. The neo-Renaissance former town hall, a pre-eminent local landmark, is now home to Maison de la Création, making it a lively hub for events and cultural gatherings, while the streets adjoining the square abound with bourgeois and social architecture, in various styles ranging from Art Nouveau to Modernism. So the idea behind this walking tour is to give you a chance to explore a neighbourhood with a rich culture and heritage, one that is also reaping the rewards of a comprehensive redevelopment undertaken with a focus on sustainability.
