Walking tour

From cattle market to meeting place

Cureghem/Kuregem’s old abattoir has always been a busy place. Farmers and horse and cattle dealers from the surrounding countryside would go there to buy and sell livestock and afterwards take the opportunity to visit the local shops, banks, cafés and restaurants. In recent decades, Cureghem/Kuregem has undergone a complete transformation to become a melting pot for people from all over the world. However, the abattoirs have remained in place. Like the generations before them, newcomers from other countries, provinces or neighbourhoods continue to shop and make their first social contacts here – something which plays a vital part in helping people settle in when arriving somewhere new. The Abattoir company itself has come up with smart and bold ways to help promote the development of the neighbourhood and its community.

In cooperation with Brukselbinnenstebuiten.
